Curriculum - RE

Intent

Religious Education at the Village Federation is based on the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus, which is provided by the Diocese. Alongside this, we also use the Understanding Christianity scheme of work to supplement the teaching of Christianity.

Our RE curriculum aims to develop an understanding of Christianity as a living world faith, through the exploration of and critical engagement with core theological concepts. We study several world religions alongside non-religious worldviews, and their impact on society and culture. We aim to provide a safe space where children feel able to critically reflect on their own religious, spiritual and philosophical beliefs.

In EYFS and KS1, our curriculum follows a three-year cycle, during which the children learn about Christianity, Islam and Judaism. In KS1, the focus of learning is based on exploring and discovering, where children encounter recurrent themes and concepts which are taught and reflected upon in different ways, allowing a deepening of knowledge and understanding year on year.

RE in KS2 is taught through a four-year cycle, during which the children continue to develop their understanding of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, but also learn about Hinduism and Humanism. In KS2, the focus of learning is based on connecting ideas and concepts, where links between units are carefully interwoven and revisited, allowing children to develop a deeper understanding of each area of study.

By the end of their journey at Primary School, our aim is to ensure that all children have developed a well-informed understanding of a variety of religions, enabling them to demonstrate an appreciation of others’ beliefs, not only in the local community, but also as a global citizen.
